Engineered Hardwod

Quality hardwood better-prepared for everyday life

What Is Engineered Hardwood?

Carpet One Gainesville carries a wide selection of engineered hardwood flooring. Engineered hardwood, which is a relatively new alternative to solid hardwood, is specially-made to offer extra dimensional stability and support. It is therefore no surprise that engineered hardwood now makes up about 40% of new wood installations.

Whereas solid hardwood is made from a single strip of wood, engineered hardwood is made from three to seven layers of wood. These layers are cross-directionally pressed together with a layer of premium hardwood, so the engineered wood planks are certainly more dimensionally stable than solid wood planks. Why? With engineered hardwood, the wood grains run in different directions, and this counteracts wood’s tendency to expand. Consequently, engineered hardwood is less likely to expand or contract in humid or moist conditions. Engineered hardwood is still not recommended for areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, but it is suitable both above and below ground.

Although engineered hardwood has a unique construction, it does look and feel exactly like solid hardwood. The looks are the same because every engineered hardwood floor has a top layer of authentic hardwood. Also, it is worth noting that engineered hardwood is made only from real wood. However, because of the layered construction, engineered hardwood cannot be refinished as many times as solid hardwood.
