Learn about Laminate Flooring

Carpet One Gainesville carries one of the area’s largest selections of quality flooring, including carpet, hardwood, vinyl, and laminate flooring. Laminate flooring is often a great alternative to wood flooring because of its increased strength, durability, and resistance.

Laminate’s Construction

Laminate combines natural style with extra durability because of its layered construction. The top layer is called the wear layer, and it protects the floor from scratches and impacts better than hardwood and other surfaces. The next layer is the decorative layer, and this gives laminate its natural look. It, for example, can include an image of real wood to replicate the natural looks of hardwood. The third layer, called the core layer, provides extra support against foot traffic since it’s made from high-density fiberboard. The base layer is last, and it is fused to the core layer for extra stability against foot traffic and even moisture.

How to Install Laminate Flooring

Laminate, like hardwood, can be glued or nailed to the subfloor. But, for a quicker installation, many laminate options can be installed using the floating method. With this method, the individual laminate planks click together and remain in place without any adhesive. As a result, the laminate floor seems to “float” over the subfloor. This installation method is certainly quicker than more traditional methods, but we still recommend relying on a professional installer.

How to Clean Laminate Floors

For the most part, laminate floors need to be treated like hardwood floors. The surface should be swept routinely, and mopping is sometimes more appropriate in areas with heavy foot traffic. But, cleaning is certainly less of a headache given laminate’s extra durability and wear resistance.
